Dead Space was masterfully atmospheric, suspenseful, and if you make sure to set the difficulty at a level that challenges you, it keeps an important feature of survival horror: scarcity.
Every fight becomes more tense when you're perpetually low on ammo and health packs. It really reinforces the idea that you're fighting to survive. Having to place your shots carefully, having to conserve ammo and use health sparingly, having to really use stasis to make battles survivable makes the game even more effective.
Going the action route would sadden me just because action games are about keeping the player killing and moving forward; the sense of careful resource management and the emphasis on survival is not a feature of the genre.
