No, I'm just me.

I play games. I've been told that this makes me not a 'real' gamer, an addict, a nerd dork geek and loser, and the perfect woman on separate occasions. I've had guys ask me out, propose marriage, ask me my address, tell me I'm amazing because I'm not like those other women, and so on and so forth.

Let's pretend, for a moment, that a woman playing World of Warcraft or Fallout is rare and scary. Even so -- are you really that immature that you would try to date someone based on that fact? It reminds me of how men say "I want a gaming girlfriend!" and then realize one day that that means they will have to fight for the 360 to play Dragon Age.

The gaming girlfriend trope is so hurtful because it erases the individual circumstances and personalities of women. We become collections of hobbies and looks to pick and choose from at your leisure. I like Cassandra because she plays video games - not because she's (hopefully) funny and smart. Hell, not even because she's pretty and make my boy parts tingle. Because she plays video games and she's least likely to throw a fit about me playing them.

THAT'S the measure by which you court a woman?

The 'I want a gamer girlfriend!' befuddles me for so many reasons, but that has to be the top one.

  1. Totally agree. I dont think there is anything wrong in appreciating that your girlfriend is a so called "gamer", its just like having a common interest. But I cant stand it whenever some random guy on WoW gives me his eternal love after exchanging names. I also cant stand the label us gamer girls have gained; There is alot of attention whores out there, but hey, I'm not one of them.
